Sevanam Australia Celebrates Onam 2022 and Chathayadinam with Grandeur

Sevanam Australia successfully hosted a grand Onam 2022 and Chathayadinam celebration on September 10, 2022, at Parkerville Hall, bringing together community members for a vibrant day filled with cultural festivities, traditional performances, and heartfelt recognitions.

A Celebration of Culture and Tradition

The day commenced with the traditional Athapookkalam (flower carpet), beautifully arranged by members of Sevanam Australia, followed by the flag hoisting ceremony conducted by Sri Jayakumar, President of Sevanam Australia. The event then moved into a spiritual atmosphere with Gurupooja and the lighting of Nilavilakku, paying homage to the teachings of Sree Narayana Guru.

The festivities continued with Keerthanam by Master Devadath Peeyush and an Onam song performance by Sri Sunil John, setting the mood for the grand celebration. Ganamela (music concert) featuring Sri Sunil John, Indu Sumod, and Sevanam Vanithavedhi captivated the audience, followed by a mesmerizing Daivadashakam dance by Anjali Rajeev & Angela Rajeev.

Distinguished Guests and Special Messages

The event was graced by Councillor Shanavas Peter, Mr. Suresh Rajan (President, Ethnic Communities Council of WA), and other esteemed guests. The association also received special greetings and best wishes from prominent leaders including:

  • Mr. Pinarayi Vijayan (Chief Minister of Kerala, India)

  • Minister Riyas (Public Works Department, Kerala, India)

Recognizing Contributions to the Community

A Feast of Flavors and Entertainment

The much-awaited Ona Sadhya (Onam Feast) was served, offering a traditional Kerala banquet with an array of delicious dishes, capturing the essence of Onam celebrations. The event also featured Payasam Fest Prize Distribution, honoring winners from the previous competition.

The afternoon was filled with vibrant cultural programs, including:

  • Thiruvathira dance by Sevanam Vanithavedhi

  • Bollywood, Malayalam, and Tamil songs by Sri Sunil John

  • Instrumental performances on violin (Angela) and guitar (Anjali)

  • Bollywood dance by Anjali

  • Song performance by Smt. Indu Sumod

Exciting Competitions and Community Bonding

A variety of traditional Onam games and competitions kept the excitement alive. Participants competed in:

  • Mittayi Perukkal (Candy Picking)

  • Kasera Kali

  • Sundarikku Pottu Kuthal (Beautification Contest)

  • Lemon Spoon Running

  • Kulam Kara (Water Carrying Race)

  • Anthakshari (Musical Game)

  • Aanakku Vaalu Varaykkal (Elephant Tail Drawing)

The competition winners were honored during a special prize distribution ceremony, followed by a heartfelt vote of thanks by Vice President Bineesh.
