Stop violence. End the silence

Sevanam Australia Hosts Domestic Violence Prevention Workshop with Support from Australia Post Grant

July 29, 2024 – Welshpool, Western Australia

In a powerful initiative to combat domestic violence and promote community awareness, Sevanam Australia conducted a Domestic Violence Prevention Workshop on July 29, 2024, at the Welshpool Learning Exchange Centre. The workshop was held with the generous support of the Australia Post Community Grant, aligning with Sevanam’s mission to uplift and protect vulnerable members of the community.

Raising Awareness, Breaking Silence

Under the campaign theme “Stop Violence, End the Silence,” the workshop brought together members of the community to learn, reflect, and empower themselves with knowledge and tools to recognize, prevent, and address domestic violence. The session emphasized the importance of speaking out and standing up against abuse in all its forms.

Expert-Led Discussion and Education

The event featured two respected speakers from the healthcare and justice sectors:

  • Krishna Dinesh, Senior Nurse, St. John of God Hospital, Midland WA

  • Deepika Praveen, Clinical Nurse, Bandyup Women’s Prison, WA

These experts shared professional insights on identifying early signs of abuse, supporting survivors, and accessing resources and legal protections available in Western Australia. Their experience in working with vulnerable populations offered attendees practical strategies to deal with real-life situations.

Community Engagement and Impact

Participants praised the interactive format of the workshop, which included Q&A sessions, scenario discussions, and guidance on building support networks. The session provided not only awareness but also a safe space for conversations around a topic that is often shrouded in silence.

This workshop was particularly significant for the South Asian and wider multicultural communities, who may face unique barriers in reporting or escaping domestic violence. Sevanam Australia took a culturally sensitive approach to ensure that the information was accessible and empowering for all attendees.

A Step Forward with the Support of Australia Post

Sevanam Australia acknowledges and appreciates the Australia Post Community Grant, which made this initiative possible. With their support, Sevanam continues to expand its efforts in education, community service, and advocacy, reaching those who need it most.

Continuing the Mission

This event is part of Sevanam Australia’s broader commitment to mental health, family welfare, and community empowerment. The organization plans to host similar workshops in the future and encourages community members to participate, volunteer, and spread awareness.
